What are multi-query operators and Why we use them in SQL?

Hello friends!

I am little bit confused about multi-query operators(UNION,UNION ALL, INTERSECT,EXCEPT) in SQL server. I want to know why we use them in SQL Server.Also Explain the difference between Joins and these multi-query operators. Explanation with example code is appreciated.
